How to Choose a Sun Hat

Compare brim coverage, construction and listed UPF before choosing a sun hat.

Start with the shape

Choose a style for the activities and fit you have in mind. A broad brim surrounds the head; a bucket or boonie style combines a crown with a brim; a neck-flap style adds fabric at the back. A visor leaves the crown open and a cap usually has a front peak.

Cancer Council recommends broad-brimmed, bucket or legionnaire-style hats that shade the face, nose, neck and ears. Caps and visors provide less coverage. A hat is one part of its five-step approach, alongside clothing, sunscreen, shade and sunglasses. Read Cancer Council’s SunSmart guidance.

Read a UPF claim carefully

Our filters reproduce fabric ratings captured in the supplied Amazon listings. They are seller-listed claims, not independent test results verified by Tanrub. Check the current product label, any supporting test information, and which panels or materials the rating applies to. Do not use a large number alone to choose a hat.

Compare the construction

  • Brim: check its width, stiffness and shape when worn.
  • Crown: compare depth, ventilation and how it accommodates your hairstyle.
  • Adjusters: confirm the actual size range and closure type.
  • Fabric: look at composition, weave, mesh panels and care instructions.
  • Extras: check whether a neck flap or chin cord is included.

Check the exact offer

Colour, size, pack quantity and accessories can vary on an Amazon product page. Match the selected option with the guide image and product ID. Read reviews from people using the same size or style, and compare delivery and returns before checkout.
